1. What are your hours of operation?

Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM

2. What if those hours don’t accommodate my schedule?

Payments may be dropped off inside the Town Hall in the gray box outside of the Tax Collector’s office (so long as town hall is open) or at the Green mailbox in front of Town Hall.

3. What if I do not live in town?

You may access your online payment platform for credit card payments. We accept all major credit cards for tax and all major credit cards except Visa for water/sewer for a fee of 2.95%.

4. What types of payments do you accept?

At the tax office we except cash, check, money order, certified bank check; Master Card for Water; Visa and Master Card for tax.

Online, for Water we take Master Card, Discover, and Amex; for taxes we take Visa, Master Card, Discover, and AMEX.

5. Why do I have to pay a convenience fee for using my credit card?

The credit card process is outsourced and comes with a cost; this cost is passed on to the bill payer.

6. That sounds expensive, is there any more cost effective way to pay my tax or water bills?

Yes, you can also sign up for ACH/EFT payments for $0.40 per bill.

7. Do you accept Phone payments?

No, we do not.

8. Why do the bills/payments get mailed to Medford?

The Town of Billerica uses Century Bank located in the city of Medford. This process is able to handle thousands of payments per bill period and is generally processed as quickly as if you mailed your bills directly to Town Hall.

9. What do I owe on my Tax/Water?

If you are a resident and have misplaced your bill you please contact the Tax collector’s office and we will provide you with this information with proper Identification. If you are a Realtor, Lawyer or any other entity involved in the sale or refinancing of one or more properties, you must request a Municipal Lien Certificate (MLC).

11. Why do I have to pay excise tax?

This is a form of Local Revenue provided by the State of Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles in conjunction with the Mass DOR to mitigate the general cost of operation for a city or town.

12. Why can’t I pay marked Motor Vehicle Excise Tax or Tax Title online?

This is a policy created under the strict guidelines set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

13. I do not own this vehicle; do I still have to pay?

Yes, on the back of each Excise Bill there are requirements you need to present for an adjustment, and then proceed to the Assessor’s office for processing.

14. I do not own this Real Estate property anymore, what do I do with the bill?

The Assessor’s will change ownership, name, as soon as the Registry of Deeds sends proof of sale. Otherwise, the current bill is the responsibility of the new property owners.
