1. How do I know what day my trash and recycling are picked up?

View the map showing collection routes and pickup days, or view the street listing with collection days for more information. If your collection day falls on or after an observed holiday, collection will be one day later.

2. Which holidays affect the trash and recycling collection schedule?

Waste Management observes six holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Town Hall will also be closed on these days. All collections on and following these days will be delayed by one day for the remainder of that week.

Please be aware that Trash and Recycling will be collected on Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Patriots Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day, however Town Hall will be closed on these days.

3. What items can I put in my blue trash cart?

Only regular household refuse should be placed in the cart.

4. What items should not go in the blue trash cart?

The Town of Billerica's mandatory recycling bylaw is in compliance with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, which bans the disposal of certain recyclables with the trash.

In addition, due to DEP waste bans, the following items are not allowed in the trash cart:

• CRTs including televisions and computers


• Construction debris


• Hazardous material (including items containing mercury)


• Propane tanks


• Rechargeable batteries


• Yard waste

Any items similar to the above mentioned items are also not allowed.

5. What items can I put in the green recycle cart?

All of the following items may go in the green cart:

• Advertising flyers
• Catalogs
• Colored and white paper
• Corrugated cardboard
• Glass jars and bottles
• Junk mail
• Lightweight boxboard (e.g., cereal boxes)
• Magazines
• Newspaper
• Phone books
• Plastic bottles and jars.
• Tin and steel cans

Recyclables do not need to be sorted.
Please no trash, plastic bags or Styrofoam in the Recycle carts.

6. Who owns the blue trash cart and the green recycle cart?

All carts remain the property of the Town of Billerica.

7. What should I do if my cart is broken?

Call the Billerica DPW Trash and Recycle Office at  978-671-1313 Ext 2, and we will schedule Waste Management to repair or replace the cart.

8. What should I do if I need an additional trash or recycling cart?

To obtain additional cart(s), please fill out the Additional Cart Application and return it to the Department of Public Works Administration Office at Town Hall. The resident must pay a cart fee for the use of any additional cart.

In addition, there is an annual disposal fee for each additional trash cart. There is no annual fee for additional recycle carts. Applications, with payment, should be directed to the Department of Public Works Administration Office, room G-11 in the Billerica Town Hall.

9. Who do I call if my recycling or trash were not picked up on my scheduled day?

Call Waste Management Customer Service at 800-972-4545.

10. Who do I call if I have any unresolved problems with my collection?

12. What can I do with Yard Waste when there is no curbside collection?

You can compost on your property, and use a mulching mower to eliminate grass clippings to be disposed of.
